Want to Get Closer to Jesus?

How About Going For a Walk?

When I think about taking a step closer to Jesus, I think about the commands in the Scriptures to “walk with Him”. This phrase is often thrown about very casually. What does it mean for us?

A good example is found in Colossians 2:6-7 - As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

Walking with Jesus or walking in Him implies several things:

  • It’s how we get to a place we want to be. In Bible times, walking was the main way you got from one place to another. Our relationship with Jesus is how we get from being sinful rebels to adopted children of God. It means submitting ourselves to Him in everything. The world may say it's better, smarter, faster to drive or fly, but Jesus says to walk with Him!

  • It requires effort. Walking requires you to expend some energy. You must get up and start moving your feet. Walking with Jesus doesn’t just happen, you have to seek Him. You have to follow Him. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27.

  • Time and patience are required. Walking is not a fast way to travel. It takes time. That means you have to stick with it to get where you want to go. Another word for this process is patience.  Building a strong relationship with someone is a lot like walking. It requires time and patience.

Take time to walk with Jesus. How? Talk with Him through prayer, read and obey God’s word and do the things Jesus does like serve and love others!
